Verify Cisco authenticity: genuine, refurbished or fake?

Counterfeit and grey-market Cisco hardware is expensive: no warranty, no software updates, often no SmartNet, sometimes a security risk. This guide shows how to tell genuine from refurbished and fake before you buy.
1. Check the serial number
Read the serial (SN) on the chassis label and via CLI (`show version` / `show inventory`). If the label and software disagree, that is a strong warning. Validate the SN in Cisco's serial/warranty checker.
2. Validate the SUDI certificate
Modern Catalyst switches carry a soldered SUDI certificate. `show platform sudi certificate` outputs a Cisco-signed chain that cannot be forged. No valid chain = do not trust the unit.
3. Physical security features
Holographic Cisco label, matching PID/VID, sealed packaging. For optics, `show interface transceiver` reveals the module's vendor and serial.
4. Supply chain
